Being a Seer
By Damarcus Volkenheim
There are 3 things one should be aware of is you are a legitimate Seer.
1. You must develop your own cataloging system
2. Sleep is a luxury you don’t get on any regular basis
3. There is no way out
It sounds daunting. It should. It is. Being a legitimate Seer is no joke and is far more important than reaping the benefits of telling some rich jerk or love struck fool what they want to hear. Ah, there is actually one more point I must add to the list.
4. It’s lonely
Besides morphing into a sleep-deprived jerk with a quick temper – and a cynical view of the world- you get the added benefit of being a hermit!
Immortally alone until the next Seer is born and trained. Only then is your agony ended. If this is still not painting the clearest picture, let me try once more.
Soul Magic has never worked for Seers. Not in the life of magic gifted to humans, which has been over 10,000 years. I have a theory for this. Anyone who is around a Seer grows tired; worn out. Even someone with the patient of – dare I say it?- a saint, will grow weary. I do not jest when I say Seers are thoroughly sleep-deprived and raving maniacs. We have rapid fire tempers and grow paranoid if a vision is plaguing us. Not to mention if someone messes with our system. Whew, don’t get me started.
Point is, having a Soul Mate via Soul Magic would probably wind up getting the pair killed by each other’s hands. I mentioned earlier that a Seer is very cynical of the world. Add to that the self-depreciation of the Seer of constant misery of being burdened with such a loathsome gift – well, trying to love that becomes an impossible puzzle.
My theory is that Soul Magic knows this and, therefore, does not pair a Seer with anyone. Hence, after all these years of living, I’m still alone. Utterly alone.
Moving on. That’s what Seers do. Move on…once the vision is done and gone with. Ha. Seer humor.
Being a Seer, or as I call it ‘Being endless plagued by future visions that will come to pass in some sense of the vague vision.’ Annoyed? Good. Welcome to the life of a Seer.
As I mentioned in my list, the best way to survive is to learn to catalog. Make your own system and stick to it. Believe me, there is no ‘one’ catalog for every Seer. Each has their own unique system that works for them. Until you find that, your life is a living nightmare. And even after finding that, life is still border-line nightmare. I mean, sleep-deprivation, hello!
I can hear the stupid question already. “Um, why do you bother to record your system if each system is different?” I’m going to sigh in frustration and not bother to answer that. If you can’t figure it out, tough!
My cataloging process consists of three parts.
1. Recording Eyes
2. Interpretation
3. Mapping/classification
I know that last is technically two things but I like things in sets of three. Deal with it.
Step 1
Recording Eyes
Thank goodness for magic! Something I don’t normally say, but for once, I do say it. It was trial and error for a while but I’m one who likes to be able to re-watch something in order to figure it out. However, visions are singular occurring. While the vision may have similar elements depending on what has happened within the real world, not much happens to change the final outcome. So, I wanted to develop a way to re-watch these visions and see those changes; thus, enabling me to pinpoint certain similarities, differences and to who/whom they are relating to.
Without getting to technical as I doubt many would be able to properly appreciate the methods behind it, yet alone understand it, I managed to link my visions/dreams to enchanted objects. I originally wanted to just store them in my mind, but after looking into the studies of the mind, I realized that would be ridiculous and probably result in me going mad. Too many visions, not enough space.
So, I have an enchanted orb which is where the vision/dream is stored for re-watching. I have an enchanted quill that describes what is happening as my brain sees it and I process it. This also includes the use of sounds. A very tricky part but I got it working. Then, I have an enchanted artist set that paints out the whole scene. (I like to be very thorough). Therefore, when I look back on this vision/dream I now have the original, a written description, and a painted image to work with.
Step 2
Interpretation
This is where the library comes in. I jest, though I do use libraries a lot. Mainly my own because I am a collector, but that’s off the point.
A point to keep in mind though that each Seer will likely have their own idea about interpretation. This is included, but not limited to, words and drawings.
So, I map out every one that I can think of. It’s not an exact thing as I do miss stuff. It happens. I may be immortal but I am still human. Being a Seer is not straight forward and makes it even more of a hassle. When I say ‘map out’ I mean I can dedicate wall to one vision/dream with interconnecting points. It can become very complicated depending on what is going on and how vague or detailed the vision/dream was. I use multiple colored strings, markers and others ‘fun’ stuff to try and help me come to an understanding, or my interpretation, of what is going to happen.
Step 3
Mapping/Classification
I think I started in on this in the second part but its all interconnected so I don’t really give a flying…you get the point. Anyway, if you couldn’t grasp the idea before, this is the obnoxious and ridiculously tedious part. Despite the fact that sometimes the visions are ‘vague’, that doesn’t mean I don’t see EVERYTHING. When it comes to visions/dreams being ‘vague’ I mean that I cannot instantly equate it to a living person. That is what takes time. But all else it crystal clear. The intimacy (I thoroughly hate that), the carnage, brutality, politics, just ugh! (Yes, I slightly threw up in my mouth, I really detest this part). And this is the second reason why I am an eternal insomniac.
Oh, I guess this should be mentioned, by EVERYTHING, that includes little side visions/dreams that usually mean nothing. Day-to-day things. Even the ultimate mundane things, like who’s going to get hit by a rock or something. Stupid. Which is why Seers isolate themselves. In the sheer hope that these pitiful excuses for visions/dreams will subside and we shall only be left with the truly perplexing visions/dreams. Joy.
Anyway, the big point for mapping to see if smaller visions/dreams can be the catalyst or have impact on the larger scale events. It happens and sometimes catching these is what can alter the outcome and change ‘the future’. Though I despise to say it like that. Very rarely can a change of a small event have that big of an impact. However, most world-altering events tend to happen every 100 years or so despite what people think. So, I chalk up my visions/dreams into two classifications: don’t’ care and important. Although, to be honest, sometimes I am uncertain so I tend to have a third pile called potentially important. Until I find out it’s a load of shit.
That’s my system. That’s how I roll. But wait! There’s more. Cause I can hear another question: what do you do with all this information?
Well, the important stuff I’ll comb through and analyze as it pertains to how the world is functioning. When I know who it is pertaining to, I get to decide if I want to let them know or not. Sounds cruel but think about it. There’s a tyrant laying waste to the land who’s destined to die. Am I really going to let the fool know this. NO! I’ll just let it go. However, if there is a group or something the can make good changes, then I tend to pass it along in subtle ways. The less people know who the Seer is the better for me. Power hungry people always want a Seer in their court for their own personal gratification. Not me. Kiss this! Plus, I’m not a people person. That was true even before I became a Seer.
Overall, I will never understand why Magic thought to give me this power. I hate it. I really do.
