In case anyone was wondering, I did take some inspiration for an elemental from Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was a phenomenal show. Back to my explanations!
So, Dartanian Volkeneheim is my Master Elemental. Besides the four basics - water, earth, air, fire - he also has control over lightening. Which, when you think about it, can be associated with the other elements anyway, but it's cool, okay!
As much as I show Dartanian using ice/water elemental magic in my book, he is actually an earth base elemental. Dartanian has always been the "playboy" of the brothers, but he is a rather immovable force. When he sets his mind it is neigh impossible to change his mind. A strong, immovable force is a necessary mindset for being a base earth elemental. I show his immense strength at this during his and Henrietta's altercation with their father.
Sidetracking one more time, as a "side-job" for being a master elemental, Dartanian uses his elemental magic in cycles. This is why he was using so much ice magic rather than his main primary, earth.
Since it takes about 25 years to master each element, Dartanian uses the elements in those cycles. While he does try to stick with just the one, as a challenge to himself, he will not hesitate to use the others if that is what the situation calls for. Again, referencing his altercation with his father. Additionally, Dartanian tries to come up with or refine an elemental spell during each cycle. This can be seen in the second book with air though I don't want to give too much away!
Technology is not quite prevalent in my world so the use of elemental magic, among others, is what gives people their jobs. Dartanian helps on this front. Example: earth. Their needs to be new ways, roads/trails put through the forests. That is up to earth elemental magic users. Dartanian has shown earth primaries how to manipulate the earth gently and efficiently enough to alter the shape of the forest so that deforestation doesn't need to happen to make these ways through. Example: air. There are desert spots and some areas suffer through extreme heat spells. Dartanian has shown air elemental magic users how to create cooling air bubbles with sufficient, breathable air flow. This can be as small as just around the head or body of one person, or can extend up to the area of a room. Depending on the strength and level of the magic user. Example: water. Getting earth and water magic users to work together, Dartanian has taught them how to irrigate, essential.

He has also helped those water users to work with pipping to utilize plumbing. Hence how my characters have running water for showers and whatnot in my story. Example: fire. Just as some areas are extremely hot, some are extremely cold, and winters around the continents of my world suck! The need for steady heat became necessary. So, Dartanian worked with air and fire elemental magic users to create warm air spaces. Additionally, he taught fire magic users how to slowly funnel enough energy into a fire to keep it going (without wood) for certain amounts of time. This depending on how much magic was funneled into it.
So, if a fire user began to funnel magic into a fire on a daily basis for a year, without draining his/her own magic, (and again depending on the magic users level), that fire would be able to stand alone and heat a space for 3-6 months. Think of it as those mock fireplaces that are electric that people have in their homes. Except, electricity is fairy new concept coming into my world. Doesn't hold much sway yet. Now, example: Lightening. This has basically been an extremely raw power mainly used for force and attack type weapons. Hardly anyone has lightening as a primary, but Dartanian has been working on ways to harness this power and find other uses for it. (I am slightly at a loss for this one, so its a work in progress for me and Dartanian.) Hahaha.
Anyway, Dartanian is a pretty cool guy (no pun intended) and his powers are based on the limits of my imagination. I will work on getting more awesome power examples put out on here, and within my books.
Hint: His kids. While not all always inherit their parents abilities, it sometimes manifests!
