You might be wondering what is up with that extra last name. Well, Naomi was married before she met Damon. Her first husbands surname was Pennon and he was an Earl. Naomi's relationship with Earl Pennon soured quickly during their first year of marriage when it became apparent that she could not conceive. Earl Pennon made no effort to mask his playboy ways and kept at least two mistresses at all times. This greatly affected Naomi who was slowly descending into a pit of despair. As the scandals around Earl Pennon increased he started taking it out on Naomi. While he would rarely hit her, he did force her into multiple sexual acts that she did not want to participate in, which consisted of a lot of BDSM.
It was when these increased acts started that, miraculous, Damon happened to come into the same area as her; so, they began their dream sequences together. Damon was able to help keep her from falling completely into a bottomless darkness and after about three months, he found out where she was and secured a divorce for her.
Naomi was still somewhat distraught because after about six months with Damon, she still hadn't conceived. However, since her relationship with Damon was far different she was able to confide in him. Damon was, once again, able to put her at ease by telling her a catch to the immortality granted him and his brothers. Since the council did not want unnecessary distractions, no mate would be able to conceive a child until all the brothers had their mates. This way, the council was hoping that, should tide turning events happen, there wouldn't be any extra reasons why all three brothers could not see to it.
I will also point out that Naomi was the first mate to be found. Damon was remarkable lucky and found her in the midst of their 200 year mark after gaining immortality.
While Naomi was not completely ignorant of magic, she had never really practiced it. She had been around it which led her to have a tolerance for it, but she had no idea what her strengths were. Since she had a lot of time she dabbled around in many things that she thought would interest her before finally realizing she had an 'artists eye'. Coming to this realization, she was able to begin a sole focus on mastering this craft. As was pointed out in the first book, Volkenheim, she is able to make her art look amazingly realistic, like it was a photo. This was true, not only for humans, but for animals and nature.
