While I mentioned in the previous post that Dedric kept a lot of journals, the exert that will be revealed come this Friday after Thanksgiving, is written when he is a bit older.
Something to keep in mind is that Dedric was the most intellectual of all the brothers and extremely gifted excluding his magical gifts. Dedric had the ability we'd see in our world of a photographic memory. He was also on a way different level than his brothers when it came to learning, so by the time he was 5, he already knew what magic he'd have and had a very good guess - that did turn out factual- about what his brothers would have.
Unfortunately, Victor Volkenheim did take advantage of this from such a young age, that he was able to manipulate Dedric the most. That, and unbeknownst to Dedric, Victor had been feeding him a magical potion tailored to keep his intellect from exceeding his own.
Dedric was brilliant enough to figure out that something was wrong and went on fasting feats until Victor would force him to consume food and drink. While it helped to clear Dedric's mind, it was never enough to allow him to formulate any sort of plan to get out from under his Father's control. Without the full capacity of his mind, Dedric couldn't outsmart his Father and save his brothers.
As there was already discord between the brothers (Damarcus against the trio: Dante, Damon, and Dartanian) Dedric was put in a very difficult situation. He'd been able to hide, mostly, his writings concerning all that went on and his thoughts about it, but Victor had years on them and soon discovered the one that held the information about Dedric's brothers. This caused Dedric to utilize a new set of magics to help conceal his journals. From Dedric's point-of-view, writing it all down was what he could do. Dedric was at such a disadvantage due to his Father that if he tried to help one brother, the others suffered.
He did try though, but only once. Dedric was the gentle one, let us not forget. Seeing his actions bring any of his brothers pain caused him to recede further into himself and live on the hope that his brothers would figure it out one day.
As readers know from my novels, this day didn't come during Dedric's life, but I'm hoping that from these journal entries, readers will understand Dedric a bit better and not fault him for his lack of action during the first 18 years of the brothers lives.
With that rambling speech, I think all readers are set. Hope y'all look forward to reading the Journal of Dedric.
